The rise of toxic masculinity in the online environment is strongly connected to sexual violence and abuse. Today we want to draw attention to the voices of young boys who have been at the centre of conversations recently.
Many of you may be aware of ‘Adolescence’ – it left an impact on most of us who watched it, especially on parents of teenagers and even our Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, drew attention to the topics tackled by the show. For many of us who are past that age, we may feel like “influencers” don’t mean much but our young people’s exposure to their content has reached unprecedented levels and their influence is far reaching.
A sixth-form student says: “Toxic masculine influencers haven’t really been seen as an issue for a lot of parents or older people, because they’re not the ones receiving a lot of the content that’s being posted online.”
Everyone must be listened and supported in our efforts to tackle Violence Against Women and Girls and in the promotion of gender equality.
